You’ll see endless turquoise waters, lush mangroves, palm tree-lined beaches, and quaint little island villages.

Pick up a hire car in Miami and stop off at key points along the way such as Coral Castle, Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, and Dry Tortugas National Park. Spend the night at one of the Keys, before making the return journey the next day.

#5 | Amalfi Coast, Italy

Next on our list is one of the most romantic destination on earth – the Amalfi Coast in Italy. This iconic road trip takes you along the stunning coastline of the Sorrentine Peninsula, with stop-offs in charming towns like Positano and Amalfi.

The Amalfi Coast is actually only around 40 km long, but we recommend starting in Salerno and ending in Naples (of Vice Versa), which is 124 km.

There are 13 seaside towns and villages along the Amalfi Coast route, of which Positano is the most popular drawcard for tourists and beachgoers. Ravello, Minori, Cetara, and Praiano are all worth a visit also. You’ll be rewarded with some of the most breathtaking views in Europe, as well as a chance to sample some delicious Italian food.

The roads are narrow and winding, so it’s best to take your time and enjoy the journey. There are also some stunning hotels to spend a night (or two) and revel in the romance of this iconic hotspot. This romantic road trip is something you must add to your Italy bucket list.

The Details:

The Pacific Coast Highway (also known as California State Route 1) is one of America’s classic road trips, and it’s easy to see why.

This course takes you along California’s stunning coastline, from Monterey to Orange County, and you’ll get to experience some incredible coastal views, wineries, great foodie spots, stunning redwood forests, drive through Big Sur (one of America’s most beautiful places), and countless beach towns along the way.

Some of the must-see stops along this route include the Santa Monica Pier, Hearst Castle, Solvang Danish township, the San Simeon Seal Rookery, and the iconic Bixby Bridge.

If you’re looking for a romantic road trip with your partner that includes wine country and rugged wilderness, this one is perfect for you!

In the summertime, you can stop off at several spots to go hiking or admire stunning viewpoints.

In winter, the area becomes a winter wonderland, offering access from Banff to several amazing ski areas in the Canadian Rockies. While the road is generally open most of the winter,  you have to take precautions, check the road conditions, and ensure your car rental is covered for snow and ice.

If you’re looking for an adventurous couples road trip that will leave you speechless, this is it!

The Details:

Distance: 232 km | 144 miles

Recommended Time: The Icefields Parkway takes around 3 hours to drive, but its best to stretch this out over at least 2 days.

#8 | The Lake District, UK

The Lake District is a stunning area of the UK that’s perfect for a couples road trip. This region is home to some of the country’s most beautiful lakes and mountains, and there are plenty of walking trails, quaint villages, and country pubs where you can stop off.

The area offers several route options but we recommend the entire Lake District Loop. Start in Ambleside and head north through Glenridding, Kirkstone Pass, Honister Pass, and Buttermere. Turn back south along the Cumbrian coastline for some of the prettiest deserted beaches in the UK, then through Coniston Water and ending up back at Ambleside.

The best place to pick up car hire near the Lake District is Kendel, Lancaster, or Carlisle.

The best time to visit is during the spring or summer when you can enjoy hiking and biking in the great outdoors. With its scenic vistas and abundance of things to do, it’s no wonder this road trip made our list.

The Details:

Distance: 188 km | 117 miles

Recommended Time: We recommend at least 5 to 7 days.

Car: Collect your vehicle in Kendel, Lancaster, or Carlisle. Book through RentalCars.com

The German Romantic Road is a fairytale route through some of the most beautiful scenery in the provinces of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. The picture-perfect 460 km route takes you through medieval villages, rolling hills, and fairy-tale castles of the Rhine River Valley.

The most popular way to enjoy this road trip is from north to south. Rent a car in Frankfurt, and begin the trip in Wurzburg, ending in the southern town of Füssen – a quaint town at the foothills of the Alps, famous for the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle.

You’ll also get to enjoy some German hospitality along the way – stop for lunch at a charming roadside inn or explore one of the many quaint towns along your route.

The Details:

#11 | The Garden Route, South Africa

The Garden Route is a 300 km stretch of road along South Africa’s coastline and is one of the country’s most spectacular drives.

This scenic route takes you from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth (or vice versa), and gets its name because it passes through the Garden Route National Park. You’ll get to experience some incredible coastal views, drive through forests and mountains, and stop at countless beach towns along the way.

There are plenty of opportunities for hiking, whale watching, and exploring caves, beaches, lush greenery, and jagged peaks.

The best time to embark on this road trip is Summer (November to March) when the weather is warmest and there are plenty of opportunities for swimming. Spring (September to October) also offers fantastic opportunities for whale watching.

This is a great multi-day road trip for couples that includes wildlife watching and adventure activities, all in one!

The Details:

Distance: 300 km | 186 miles

Car: Start and end the trip in Cape Town. Book your car hire or campervan through RentalCars.com

#12 | The Great Dolomites Road, Italy

If you’re looking for a road trip that’s full of incredible views, then look no further than the Great Dolomites Road in Italy. This route takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery in all of Europe, with towering mountains and crystal-clear lakes.

There are several routes to take through the Dolomites, however, we recommend picking up a rental vehicle in Milan or Verona, and making your way north past Lake Garda, towards the town of Bolzano. Over the next few days make your way through Alpe di Siusi, Val Gardena, Cortina d’Ampezzo, then looping north towards Lago di Braies, and back towards Bolzano.

The Dolomites is all about lakes, alpine meadows, and hiking, so be sure to bring your camera. You’ll also find some of Italy’s best food and wine along the way. Trust us, this is one couples road trip that you won’t want to miss!

The Details:

Distance: 140 km | 86 miles

Recommended Time: 5-7 days to allow plenty of time for hiking and sightseeing.

Car: Collect rental vehicle in Milan. Book your car hire through RentalCars.com

#13 | North Coast 500, Scotland

This road trip has been dubbed “Scotland’s answer to Route 66.” Starting in Inverness, you’ll wind your way along the country’s stunning north coast, taking in some of its most beautiful scenery.

The 500-mile route (hence the name – in fact, it’s actually 516 miles) is a loop road trip through northern Scotland. It takes you through the Cairngorms National Park, past lochs and castles, and ultimately ends at John o’ Groats.

On this road trip you’ll experience some of the most stunning scenery in the world – from rugged mountain peaks to beautiful sandy beaches, remote fishing villages, and try some traditional local food. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to stop for hikes, picnics, and even whisky tastings.

The Details:

Distance: 830 km | 516 miles

Recommended Time: Allow at least 5-7 days to explore this beautiful part of the world.

Car: Book your car hire or campervan through RentalCars.com

#14 | Gotthard and Oberalp Passes, Switzerland

If you’re looking for an epic mountain road trip, look no further than the Gotthard and Oberalp Passes in Switzerland.

There are several passes through the Swiss Alps, and this route takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery. Start the trip in Andermatt and end in Disentis. The drive is not for the faint of heart – there are many hairpin turns and steep grades – but it’s definitely worth it!

The high alpine road that crosses the passes is closed in winter (October to December) depending on snowfall. The best time to go is during the summer months when all the roads are open.

The Details:

Distance: 330 km | 205 miles

Recommended Time: The road takes about 5 hours to drive but we recommend allowing up to 3 days.

Car: Book your car hire or campervan through RentalCars.com

#15 | The Lavender Route, France

The beautiful Provence region of France is home to some of the world’s most stunning lavender fields and offers a great opportunity for a romantic road trip through the beautiful French countryside, stopping at quaint villages and charming towns along the way.

Start your trip exploring Avignon, one of the most beautiful cities in France. Then head for the countryside. There are several routes to take through Provence, but we recommend setting a course from Avignon through Coustellet, Gordes, to Sault and returning via Roussillon.

You’ll get to explore medieval castles, Roman ruins, and experience the incredible fragrance of lavender in full bloom. This is an ideal road trip for couples who love nature and want to relax in one of Europe’s most idyllic settings.

The Details:

Distance: 183 km | 114 miles

Need a Rental Car for your Trip?

We absolutely love a good road trip. The freedom and flexibility of having your own car and being able to stop where and when you like is the best part of a holiday. We’ve rented cars for road trips in over 15 countries, including Italy, Iceland, California, France, Australia, and many more.

We recommend using RentalCars.com to reserve your rental vehicle. They list many different types of vehicles from the biggest brands in over 60,000 locations around the world and offer free cancellation on most bookings if things don’t go to plan. Plus, they also have a Price Match Guarantee!

Road Trip Essentials for Couples

  • Portable Charger – To charge all your devices on the go be sure to pack a portable charger with plenty of juice! This one from Anker will charge your phone up to 6x or even your laptop. I store it, plus all my cords and tech in this Thule PowerShuttle.
  • Reusable Water Bottle – because you don’t want to litter the beautiful destination you’re visiting with plastic. We use the Hydroflask brand.
  • Eye Mask – I can’t stand hotel or campervan blinds that let in a tiny little bit of light… especially when I’m jetlagged. You can’t go past the Slip Eyemask for ultra-comfort.
  • Travel Cup – Do you love a morning coffee or tea? Me too. I use this reusable travel mug all the time.
  • Packing Cubes – when you’re living out of a vehicle, its essential to have an organized bag so you can find things quickly. Also, if I’m staying in a hotel for just one night, I will leave my bag in the car and take a packing cube filled with everything I need into the hotel. These packing cubes from Eagle Creek are great.
  • Travel Towel – Many of the road trips I this guide include stops at beaches, waterfalls, hot springs, or natural swimming holes. This Sea to Summit Travel Towel packs up small and dries super quick.
  • Portable Speakers – great for when you have a picnic, or when cooking dinner if you plan on renting a camper. I like this Bose speaker because its wireless and takes up very little space in your bag.
  • Sunscreen – Make sure it’s at least 50+ and organic. I use this one from Supergoop.
  • Travel Medication – I always travel with Travelan and Imodium. If you get an upset tummy on the road (or on a plane), it pays to be prepared!
  • Travel Insurance – I never go anywhere without Travel Insurance! It really helped when I had to change our travel plans due to a volcano eruption in Bali, or the time that my husband cut his hand on a rusty piece of metal on a road trip around Iceland. For the most comprehensive worldwide coverage, I use and recommend World Nomads.
