#1 | Freycinet National Park

Driving Time from Hobart: Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes

Driving Time from Launceston: Approximately 2 hours 10 minutes

Where to Stay: Picnic Island | Freycinet Lodge | Piermont Retreat

Freycinet National Park is undoubtedly one of the most popular Tasmania weekend escapes and a great place to take your beloved if you love a combination of outdoor activities, good food and wine!

Hiking is the number one thing to do at Freycinet National Park, with Wineglass Bay lookout being one of the most popular hikes in Tasmania. The Hazards Beach Circuit and Mount Amos boulder scramble are also great options for those looking for something a little longer or more challenging.

For the perfect romantic Tasmanian getaway, we recommend teaming up a morning hike with an afternoon winery visit. Some great cellar doors to check out include Devils Corner (also a great spot for lunch), Gala Estate and Craigie Knowe Vineyards.

Do you love a good oyster to get the aphrodisiac juices flowing? Why not stop by Freycinet Marine Farm to pick up a dozen. Some other great spots to eat around Coles Bay include Richardson’s Bistro, Geographe Restaurant, or The Bay Restaurant.

If a road trip along the east coast of Tasmania (including a stop at Freycinet National Park) is your idea of a romantic trip, then check out our ultimate east coast Tasmania road trip itinerary.

#2 | Tamar Valley & Pipers River Region

Launceston wineries and vineyards in the Tamar Valley

Driving Time from Hobart: Approximately 3 hours

Driving Time from Launceston: Approximately 20 minutes

Where to Stay: Domescapes in the Vines | Tamar River Apartments | Tamar Solar Home

If you’re into food and wine, then one of the most popular spots for a couples getaway in Tasmania is the Tamar Valley and Pipers River region.

Start your weekend in Tasmania by flying into Launceston. From here the Tamar Valley is just a short 20 minute drive away and offers some of the best wineries in Tasmania! The Tamar Valley is synonymous with cold climate wines, while Pipers River region is famous for producing some of the most awarded Australian sparkling wines.

Clover Hill Estate, Josef Chromy and Tamar Ridge winery are a few crowd favourites. But if you’re seeking something a little more intimate, we highly recommend Moores Hill Estate or Delamere Vineyards. To make things a little easier, here’s a list of our favourite Tamar Valley wineries to help you choose.

Being so close to Launceston, you could opt to stay in the city and jump on an organised wine tour. Alternatively, there are a few romantic accommodation options dotted around the rolling hills and rivers of this beautiful wine region – you can’t go past the Tamar River Apartments for stunning views.

#3 | Pumphouse Point, Lake St. Clair

Pumphouse Point luxury hotel - The Best Places for a Couples Getaway in Tasmania

Driving Time from Hobart: Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes

Driving Time from Launceston: Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes

Where to Stay: Pumphouse Point

If you are looking for the ultimate romantic destination in Tasmania for couples, there is one place you need to head – Pumphouse Point.

Pumphouse Point is a gorgeous adults-only retreat located by and on the glacial Lake St Clair surrounded by forest in the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park. The hotel buildings are within heritage buildings that once operated as a hydroelectric station. It’s a place like no other.

There are two buildings where you can stay with the top choice being The Pumphouse itself at the end of the jetty and on the lake. All have great views of the lake and surrounds and are comfortable and come complete with a huge minibar with picnic supplies.

A stay here is not just about gorgeous surrounds and great rooms, however. Meals are included as well as activities. You can take a rowboat out on the lake, ride an electric bike or hike one of the many trails that surround this area and explore more of the national park. Definitely don’t miss the opportunity to get out and explore the area!

There are also a few different communal lounge areas with fireplaces and books and games. It can get quite cold here so sitting by the fire is a great way to spend the evening after a day out hiking.

Everything is well presented with great service and it really is a fabulous place for a romantic getaway in Tasmania.

Driving Time from Hobart: Approximately 3 hours 30 minutes

Where to Stay: Bay of Fires Bush Retreat | Aunt Sarahs | Bay of Fires Apartments

For those looking for a weekend getaway in Tasmania that involves beautiful beaches and a slower pace of life, then you can’t go past Binalong Bay.

Located around 2 and a half hours drive east of Launceston, Binalong Bay is the perfect escape for couples wishing to explore the world-renowned Bay of Fires region. Binalong Bay is a sleepy coastal village know for its white sand, turquoise waters and bright orange boulders.

At Binalong Bay you and your loved one can jump in a boat and explore the bay, go hiking along the pure white sands, or dive for abalone. Or you can simply spend your days relaxing on the beach at Cosy Corner, Jeanneret Beach or one of the other many secluded spots along the 50km stretch of coastline that makes up the Bay of Fires. There’s a pretty good chance you’ll be able to find a beach all to yourselves!

Boats in Salamanca Bay in Hobart, Tasmania - Romantic Getaways Hobart

Driving Time from Launceston: Approximately 2 hours 15 minutes

Where to Stay: Moss Hotel | The Islington Hotel | Henry Jones Art Hotel | MACq 01 Hotel

If you’re keen on a romantic weekend away in the city, then Hobart is your go to place! This picturesque city is home to Tasmania’s most beautiful views and offers excellent food, wine and accommodation. There are so many romantic things to do in Hobart that will make your couples weekend away just perfect.

Hobart is located on the shores of Derwent River and is small enough to explore on foot while being home to a wide range of excellent restaurants, cafes and other attractions.

There are a plethora of accommodation options for your romantic getaway in Hobart. Luxurious hotels such as The Islington Hotel and Henry Jones Art Hotel – both offer high levels of service and comfort that will make any couple feel right at home. There are also many boutique properties dotted around Hobart that offer more intimate surroundings.

Foodies need not look further than Hobarts’ waterfront, home to a range of eateries, including the award-winning Cornelian Bay Boathouse Restaurant.

The best season to visit Hobart is in summer when there are fewer visitors and temperatures are mild. It’s the perfect time of year for a glorious beach break or hikes up Mount Wellington. It also hosts its annual art festival, MONA FOMA, with world-class exhibitions that will leave you breathless – not just from all the fresh air!

The little boat shed on Dove Lake at Cradle Mountain National Park - romantic weekend getaways in Tasmania

Driving Time from Hobart: Approximately 4 hours

Driving Time from Launceston: Approximately 2 hours

Where to Stay: Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge | Eagles Nest Retreat | Cradle Mountain Hotel

Marvelling at gorgeous views by the day before curling up with a glass of wine by the fire are just two of the things that make Cradle Mountain one of the best places to stay in Tasmania for couples.

Located just 2 hours drive from Launceston, Cradle Mountain is a nature lovers’ playground. The vast array of wildlife and absolutely stunning hiking trails it offers are perfect for couples who love to get outdoors.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, then you should add Cradle Mountain to the top of your list of Tasmania getaways to plan a trip ASAP!

#7 | Mount Field National Park

Russell Falls at Mount Field National Park - Best weekend getaways Tasmania

Driving Time from Hobart: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes

Driving Time from Launceston: Approximately 3 hours

Where to Stay: Maydena Mountain Cabins | Sassafras Springs | Sunnybrook Cottage

One of the most underrated Tasmania getaways for couples is Mount Field National Park. Located just 1.5 hours out of Hobart, this is one of Tassie’s oldest and most popular national parks – and with good reason!

The National Park itself is packed with ancient gum trees that are as tall as they are old. Reaching heights of over 100 metres, some of these trees have been around for hundreds of years – well before European settlement of Tasmania!

Going for a walk amongst these giants with your loved one is a fantastic way to get back in touch with nature and enjoy some quality time together. Finish with the triple-tiered Russell Falls, a breathtaking spot where you can feel the raw power of nature as you watch the water cascade down each of the individual falls.

Just 45 minutes from Mount Field is another unique experience. A salmon and trout hatchery, set amongst beautiful gardens modelled on 19th-century English grounds makes for a peaceful and relaxing setting to spend some time with your partner. Feed the salmon and enjoy a stroll around the grounds and museum together.

In terms of accommodation, the National Park Hotel or the Russell Falls Cottages are both romantic places to stay, located right by the entrance to the park. However, if you are a more adventurous couple, consider camping within the park itself – just don’t forget your 2 person tent!

#8 | Derby

Lake Derby Floating Sauna - Tasmania Weekend Getaways

Driving Time from Hobart: Approximately 3 hours 30 minutes

Driving Time from Launceston: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes

Where to Stay: The Keep | Willowlodge | River Cabins Derby

For couples looking for an active Tasmania weekend away, Derby offers something unique that you won’t find elsewhere in Australia.

A quaint historic town that was once a thriving mining settlement, had become a ghost town after the mining boom had subsided. That was until 2013 when it was transformed into a wonderland of mountain-biking tracks and trails that saw the town flourish once again.

Possibly one of the most underrated Tasmania getaways you’ll find, we think Derby is a great place to head with your loved one if you like to get down and dirty (literally). Offering a range of biking trails to suit novice and experienced riders, breathtaking scenery, and cosy cabins to stay after a hard day’s effort. For a romantic luxury adventure, check out the secluded Blue Derby Pods Ride.

And if mountain biking is not your thing, you can also visit the Little Blue Lake, explore Mt. Paris Dam wall, or chill out at the Lake Derby Floating Sauna – one of the most romantic experiences in Tasmania. After a day exploring the outdoors, try the grub at The Hub Pizza and Beer Bar.

#9 | Bruny Island

The Neck Lookout at Bruny Island - Best Tasmania weekend getaway

Driving Time from Hobart: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes

Driving Time from Launceston: Approximately 4 hours

Where to Stay: 43 Degrees Bruny Island | Adventure Bay Retreat | Seascape Bruny Island

Bruny Island is one of the premier destinations in Tasmania and offers one of the best romantic getaways Hobart couples will love, because its only 1-hour drive from Hobart to Bruny Island plus a short ferry ride.

Bruny Island offers a pristine wilderness area that stretches into the Southern Ocean off the south coast of Tasmania. The island is a foodie’s mecca where you’ll spend your weekend visiting wineries, eating chocolates, cheese, oysters and other artisan foodie finds.

Bruny Island Premium Wines is a great spot for cellar door tastings, while the Tasmanian House of Whiskyshowcases some of the world’s best drops of scotch. Pick up some cheese from the Bruny Island Cheese Co.and some fresh Oysters from Get Shucked – possibly the only place in the world where you can by fresh Oysters from a drive-through window.

Bruny’s beautiful long white sandy beaches are perfect for a romantic stroll, or penguin watching at night. While a jet boat tour into the Southern Ocean provides a taste of adventure and wildlife spotting.

Accommodation is possible in everything from private holiday homes to luxury couples retreats. The isolated location of Bruny Island makes it one of the most secluded romantic getaways in Tasmania with plenty of opportunities to spend some one-on-one time with your loved one.
